Teen and Adult Workshops

There will be lots for older children, teens and adults to do at festiValley - it's not just for the littlies. There are a varied selection of workshops lined up for you to hone your skills or to learn new ones. Some will be available to do all day, but others will be a case of "first in best dressed".

This week Brisbane Roar have agreed to come along to run soccer workshops, which will be a great opportunity! There will also be archery, fencing and circus skills. African drumming and Latin dancing will tap into musical talents while clay castles and tie dying will allow for creative pursuits. A biodynamic gardening workshop will help to bring out your green thumb. Be sure to run through the programme and get tickets for workshops you don't want to miss.

festiValley Committee - PAFA meeting 24 Nov

festiValley Committee Member - A person who is responsible for overseeing the management of selected festiValley actitivies/responsibilities.

Does this sound like you? If so I'd love to hear from you. It's time to put together a festiValley Committee. This committee will oversee the festiValley activities/responsibilities to make sure everything is running smoothly. They'll support the festiValley Activity Planners and help to put 'to do' lists in place. If you have a particular interest in a certain area of festiValley you can oversee that area.

Come along to the next PAFA meeting on Tuesday 24 November 7-9pm Arts Centre to let me know you are keen. If you can't make it you can send me an email or let me know if you see me around the school.

For more information on what you would need to do in this role click here.

Eco festival

Caught up with the SVSS Sustainability Committee to talk about ways they could support our festival being eco. Those that came along to the fair vision meeting earlier in the year said it was important that we made informed decisions about the impact our festival will have on the environment. The Committee were keen to support us in this!

Roles & Responsibilities

Roles and Responsibilities documents have been drawn up to make it clearer what each person is responsible for with planning festiValley.

These show that the overall responsibility of the fair is held by the President of PAFA - Michele Harris. The festiValley Coordinator is myself. This role is supported by the festiValley Committee members who will oversee a number of festiValley activities/responsibilities. Then there are the festiValley Activity Planners who are looking after one activity/responsibility and then volunteers.

This ensures that there is someone managing each aspect of festiValley from the high level (me) right down to the nitty gritty (festiValley Activity Planners and volunteers). It also means that the work is spread out so there is less chance of burnout. It is also clear how to escalate any issues or problems.

This is easier to understand from the documents themselves.

festiValley Plan

For those of you that like some detail, here is the festiValley plan. Feedback was sought from PAFA and school administration and incorporated. Feel free to let me know your thoughts as well.

festiValley Revealed

Thank you to everyone for your ideas on a fair name. In a recent PAFA meeting the name was put to a vote and it was decided that our fair will be called festiValley. This name will be familiar to some of you from an event held at the school in the past. The fair will not be a repeat of the first festiValley. However, people loved this name for our fair as it reflects our fair vision and the original festiValley captured the feelings of community and celebration that the fair aims to inspire.

It was also decided that festiValley will consist of 3 parts:
1. Opening of the Art Exhibition Friday night 27 August
2. Fair Saturday 28 August noon until twilight
3. Performance evening Saturday night 28 August.

Extending into the night will help us to tap into the magic of an evening event. It will also provide the opportunity for us to be entertained, to relax and share a meal with friends and family after a busy but fun-filled fair.

Jan Baker-Finch has kindly offered to help to develop and coordinate this performance evening.

It is the intention that the name festiValley, the 3-part structure and the date (last weekend of August) will be constant each year, however each element of festiValley may grow or evolve.

Open Day

Thanks for the opportunity to come along to Open Day meetings to see how this event is organised. There was a lot I could take from this to use in fair planning.

Health and Safety is one issue that is present in all events. To support Open Day I put together a sheet for ensuring the cafe is meeting safety requirements. This will be able to be reused in all school events where food is served.

To view this document click here.

One thing people asked for was to prevent the need for relearning each time an event is held at the school. For this reason I put together an Event Feedback Form. This is for those organising a school event to fill out so that we can learn from their experiences. It includes details on resources needed, time required, things that worked well and things that could be improved.

For more details on this form click here.

Vision

"There is joy in the anticipation, the celebration itself and the memories." This was an exerpt I read about Steiner festivals which I think is also perfect to explain the joy a fair can bring. And now after a wintery night on 9 June we have a vision to guide us on our way.
Fair vision - A magically enriching festival set in the heart of picturesque golden valley. Enliven the senses with vibrant and creative experiences for all.
The fair vision will be supported by the following underlying principles -
The fair will:
  • provide opportunities to celebrate and build community,
  • generate funds and
  • reflect Steiner philosophies.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to creating the fair vision.
